These are a great way to add more space to the bunk bed.
Another thing to consider when choosing between stairs and a ladder is the age of your child. It is recommended that children less than 6 years old not sleep on the top bunk. Children older than 6 years old who are able to climb vertically could do better with stairs rather than climbing a ladder. If you intend to use your bunk bed for guests, such as young children or adults who have limited mobility, it's recommended to use stairs.
A straight staircase on the sides of the bunk requires a minimum of 95" of space on each side. If you do not have the space, you can opt for a u shaped staircase which does not require as much space, however it still allows you to get access to the top bunk safely and safely. Certain beds let you detach the stairs when not in use. This reduces the size of the bed and makes it more suited to multi-purpose spaces. You can also find staircases that connect to the ends of the bed, which eliminates the need for a separate handrail, and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails provide children with the confidence and independence to climb into and out of bed on their own. They must be set in a proper way to ensure there aren't any gaps or loosening between the guardrails and the frame of the bed. If you decide to install guard rails, follow the manufacturer's instructions and check them regularly for any holes or looseness which could cause an entrapment.
One of the most important safety tips for bunk beds is to ensure they are kept away from electrical devices and any other objects that could turn into projectiles if your children play or sleep. Be sure to place bunks away from windows, which can pose a fall risk when children climb up to the top of the bed.
You might want to put an evening light on the ladder to light the way up and down if your child wakes at night to use the bathroom, or if they are woken by the sound of a storm and are forced to leave their room.
A safety net could be placed on top of the bunk to keep children from falling out when they are sleeping or playing. This is especially a good idea for older children who are more likely to sleep on the top bunk.
The guardrails must be securely attached to the bunk beds and cannot be removed without tools. The openings in the guardrails that are above the mattress foundation should not be larger than 3.5 inches to avoid entrapment and strangulation. To test this, insert the wedge block in Figure 1 into each opening in the lower edge of the uppermost member of the guardrail and above the underside of the mattress foundation. Then apply 33-lbf (147-N) force in a perpendicular direction to the plane of the larger end of the block and maintain it for a period of 1 minute.
It is a good idea to instruct your children not to hang anything on the guardrail or ladder, such as belts, clothes, or sports equipment. Instead you should make use of a clothes rack to prevent these objects from becoming a strangulation risk for your child. Also, ensure that more than one kid should not sleep on the top floor of the bunk, since this could create an imbalance that could result in falling.
